Racing 92 remains on six consecutive defeats against Stade Toulousain in the Top 14. This Saturday the Parisians hope to put an end to this bad series by challenging the French champion, stronger than ever.
Last week’s big defeat suffered by the Racingmen against Stade Français (24-40) left its mark on the Ciel et Blanc squad. The numerous absences of internationals do not explain everything and the debacle in the derby is the fifth setback of the season in the Top 14. This Saturday’s reception of the French champion, Stade Toulousain in Créteil, will be the opportunity for the men to Stuart Lancaster to show a more conquering face and bounce back in front of his audience despite an opposition which promises to be tough against a confident team. But a rebound is more than hoped for for a team which is having a fairly average start to the season where the numerous turnovers have not helped the team to stabilize.
Racing needs more leaders
For Cameron Woki, the third row and French international, it is above all a question of mentality and leadership. It is up to us to show the way through our qualities and our status. We are the future of the club, after all. What’s hard is that against Stade Français, we took a lot of points in a few minutes and little by little, we lost players one after the other…The question is therefore neither the game plan, nor Stuart Lancaster. We are the only ones to have a say on the pitch and in the Ile-de-France derby, we should have shown a completely different face.” Frédéric Michalak, Lancaster’s assistant, agrees with the player “It’s mental. We have to assume certain periods of matches. We still see too many players who, based on their body language, give up a little quickly.”
But Woki also wanted to point out that the matches in Créteil do not necessarily give a particular advantage to his teammates and that this weighs on the performance and the balance sheet. The change of stage is complicated. It feels like we’re playing outside all the time. But it will soon be over. There are only two matches left to play in Créteil and we will return home, to Paris-La Défense-Arena. Please note, this is neither a handicap nor an excuse. But we lack a little stability in terms of home matches. It’s not the best for us.”
Dupont and Roumat spared
On the Toulouse side, the internationals Ramos, Cros and Marchand have decided to continue after the autumn tour. They were in training all week and will have to start. The other executives like Dupont, Mauvaka, Flament, Meafou, Roumat, Mallia and Kinghorn have all been spared and are not part of the trip to Créteil. Note that La Rochelle winger Teddy Thomas will join the red and black next season. He would have given his agreement to Ugo Mola a few days ago and will follow the path of his club partner George-Henri Colombe.
