On Tuesday morning, the national task force stormed into a villa in the Stockholm area, with the help of Säpo, the police and the Armed Forces. Two people were arrested.
According to information to TV4 Nyheterna, it is about a man and woman, a married couple, in their 60s. The man is suspected of gross illegal intelligence activities against Sweden and gross illegal intelligence activities against a foreign power. The woman is suspected of aiding and abetting the crimes.
Tony Ingesson, assistant university lecturer in intelligence analysis at Lund University, explains what may be behind the arrest, why helicopters were involved and why we are seeing increased activity in the espionage business right now.
– There may be an increased intensity of intelligence activity throughout Europe, due to Ukraine and the sabotage against Nordstream. It could also be increased vigilance from security services and counterintelligence, he says.
