An Italian man has been arrested by Swiss police, suspected of leading a league that smuggled seven tons of gold to Switzerland.
For five years, gold jewelry, coins and gold bars have been run across the border – with the gold hidden in secret compartments behind the car’s dashboard or in the clothing of the car chairs. Part of the gold has been passed on to Germany.
The suspected 65-year-old man forged certificate to deceive jewelers in Switzerland on the origin of gold.
According to Swiss police, the country’s state fund has been deceived at 25 million Swiss Franc – almost SEK 300 million – in taxes and fees, Swissinfo reports.
