Tom Hanks has repeatedly mentioned in the past that he thinks Bonfire of the Vanities is a bad film. The 1990 film also surprisingly flopped at the box officedespite the big stars Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith as well as master director Brian De Palma (Scarface).
Even though Tom Hanks thinks it was a disaster, he also benefited from it. US talk show host Oprah Winfrey asked him in an interview (read on Oprah ) whether he would have preferred not to have made the film in hindsight.

When asked why he accepted the role in the first place, Hanks replied that it was offered to him. Although he was a well-known actor in the early 90s, his greatest successes came after that.
