Although Top Gun: Maverick was filmed in 2019, the film was only released in cinemas now. The reason are several postponements due to the pandemic, which were also in the interest of Tom Cruise. For the action star, it was never an option to sell the blockbuster to a streaming service like Netflix because of the uncertain corona situation.
For Cruise, the Top Gun 2 launch practically means saving cinema in times of crisis. After the launch weekend, it looks like the actor’s plan is working. Top Gun: Maverick is started phenomenally and straight away broke a personal Tom Cruise record.

Top Gun 2 puts on an extremely strong box office opening weekend
As Cinema Blend reports, Top Gun: Maverick is over the launch weekend only in the US $124 million recorded. That’s a new record for Cruise, beating his previous successes with Mission: Impossible 6 – Fallout ($61.2 million over launch weekend) and War of the Worlds ($64.9 million over launch weekend).
Globally, the preliminary box office result looks even more impressive. According to Box Office Mojo, Top Gun: Maverick has a budget of $170 million after the first few days whopping $260 million recorded.
For the studio Paramount Pictures and Tom Cruise, the blockbuster’s years of delay seem to have paid off in full. Due to the more favorable Corona situation with many more open cinemas than in 2020 and 2021, Top Gun 2 is currently developing into a financial high-flyer. There’s a good chance that Cruise will be coming up with the most successful film of his career may boast.
