Specifically, the action of Gangs of New York begins in 1846. In that quarter Five Points Irish priest Vallon (Liam Neeson) and his followers face Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis) in a street fight. The confrontation ends fatally. Vallon dies at Bill’s hand in front of his son.

16 years later, Vallon’s son, Amsterdam (Leonardo DiCaprio), is a young man and wants himself to avenge his father’s murder. He finds an ally in the thief Jenny Everdeane (Cameron Diaz). But he soon becomes part of Bill’s circle of confidants and notices how the murderer is becoming a substitute father for him.

Building on this premise, Scorsese stages a gripping New York epic that captivates through its staging alone. The camera guides us tirelessly elaborately designed sets, in which life simmers. There is never any peace here. The city is increasingly turning into a labyrinth full of abysses.

Gangs of New York was released in 2002 and was featured at the Oscars the following year. The film received ten nominations. In the end, however, he left as biggest loser of the evening home. Scorsese had no chance against Chicago (Best Film), The Pianist (Best Director) and Co.
