Today Hungary starts the EU presidency News in brief

Hungary, known as the quarrel of the opposite side, has blocked sanctions against Russia in the EU and supporting Ukraine in Russia’s war of aggression.

Today, Hungary begins its term as the EU presidency.

It is the first time that a country classified as undemocratic by the European Parliament holds the presidency of the EU. The fact that Hungary has blocked sanctions against Russia in the EU and supporting Ukraine in Russia’s war of aggression has caused concern.

The Union has tried to get the most important foreseeable issues taken care of off the table before the h-moment, so that Hungary would not be able to prevent them. The foreign ministers of the EU countries, among other things, recently approved a new sanctions package against Russia before the presidency was transferred from Belgium to Hungary. In May, it was also agreed that Russia’s frozen funds would be used for the benefit of Ukraine, and in June we had time to officially start membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.

The EU Presidency leads the speech at Council meetings. The presidency rotates among the EU member states every six months.
