At the October 12, 2023 all eight episodes of the horror series start The Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix. After celebrated multi-part series such as The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, a contemporary horror grandmaster is saying goodbye to the streaming service to which he had committed himself for several years. The miniseries is Mike Flanagan’s final Netflix horror project before he moves to Amazon for the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower.
Horror highlight on Netflix: The fall of the House of Usher jumps in time
Loosely inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s story of the same name * and his entire horror work, the Netflix series’ plot follows the fall of the House of Usher: the Descent of a millionaire familywho runs a shady pharmaceutical company.
Death overtakes the siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline (Mary McDonnell) not only in relation to their customers, but also to their children: right at the beginning we learn of the death of all six descendants. The horror series gradually reveals how this happens repeated jumps in time from the present to the pastwhere the shapeshifter Verna (Carla Gugino) wreaks brutal havoc.

The first trailer was a nightmare fireworks display and the critics were also extremely positive about the Netflix horror series with 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Mercury News, for example, praises the horror interludes as “Not just frightening, but disturbing” and called The Fall of the House of Usher “one of the best Netflix series ever produced”.
While Slant Magazine is the successful one “personal and philosophical subplots” positively highlighted, the AV Club is impressed by the “operatic death scenes”. Moviepilot also declared The Fall of the House of Usher to be a horror masterpiece – or as colleague Andrea wrote: “Flanagan knows, even in his most cynical work, his Not only to disgust and scare the audience, but also to shatter the heart.”
