An accident meant that Tobias Forsberg could never play ice hockey again.
Now the former forward is ready for a new role in the sport.
– I’m sick of it, says Forsberg to Hockey Sweden.
It was in the match between Leksand and Almtuna at the end of December 2018 that the accident occurred. Tobias Forsberg crashed into the rim headfirst and broke his neck. A then 30-year-old Tobias was paralyzed from the armpits and his hockey career was thus over.
Forsberg’s new role
Now Forsberg is ready for a new role. The 35-year-old is a new board member at his former club Leksand. The association has had major problems getting its board in order since the annual meeting in August, but now the pieces are starting to fall into place.

Forsberg was asked by the selection committee via his agent, and after some discussion it was stated after a general meeting that he is now part of the board.
– It was honourable. At the same time, I thought about what it could mean and something I can undertake. In addition, I played with Jens Bergenström, who sat on the board and with whom I am good friends. He only had good things to say. Then I spontaneously felt that it would be fun to be part of Leksands IF again. There has been a small gap in my life when it ended the way it did, he tells Hockey Sweden.

Want to help Leksand
The former left forward has no previous experience of board work, but hopes to add a lot to the sporting part.
– I want to add what I have learned during all the years I have been a player. Especially during my eight years in Leksand. I really know what it’s like down in the dressing room. How the conversation goes and how it is to perform in a group. I think the sporting part is hard to read, you have to have experienced it to gain an understanding of those things. Board work is something new for me, but I feel safe with the sporting part.

Piteå-born Forsberg is looking forward to returning to hockey, albeit in a new role.
– It’s been a long time since I was so excited to go in and be a part of something. The social aspect is something I missed a lot. To be part of a group, work in the same direction, and be involved in making a difference for something I’m passionate about. It’s almost what I missed more than going out and skating on the ice. I really go into this with a lot of humility and feel like I want to learn a lot. I’m so busy.
