TOBACCO PRICE. As of January 1, 2022, some references will see their prices change. Which brands of cigarettes are affected?

On January 1, some brands of cigarettes will see their price change, as shown in the latest tobacco price nomenclature, published by the customs. As a reminder, the last notable increase took place in November 2020, reaching ten euros for a pack of twenty cigarettes. However, tobacco prices are not spared by certain monthly changes, decided unilaterally by tobacco manufacturers. Here are some examples of the references that will evolve on January 1st:

Please note: this price increase also concerns certain references of roll-your-own tobacco. Asked by France info on these successive increases and decreases operated by tobacco manufacturers, Professor Bertrand Dautzenberg, pulmonologist and secretary general of Act, Alliance Anti-Tabac, denounced an “attempt at marketing the tobacco industry”.

Among our Spanish neighbors, tobacco prices are lower than in France. It is possible to consult the latest prices in force on the government website, here. As an indication, know for example that on August 24, the price of the package of Marlboro Gold (rigid to twenty units), is 10.50 euros in France is 5.60 euros in Spain. Be careful, however, the El Dorado should not last! The Spanish government recently announced its intention to curb smoking. The government council has in fact validated an increase which was to come into force on February 1, 2020. The excise price is increased to 12.25 euros for 1,000 euros, against 12 euros at the present time. As an indication, the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes was 80% cheaper in Luxembourg than in France in 2018.

In Germany, tobacco prices are slightly higher than in Spain. The price of a pack of cigarettes is generally around six euros.

The price of tobacco in Switzerland remains lower than in France. As an indication, the package of Marlboro reaches 8.50 Swiss francs, or 7.70 euros, against more than 9 euros in France today, noted France 3 Bourgogne Franche-Comté last November.

Italy is often considered the El Dorado for smokers. And for good reason, packets of cigarettes are “30 to 50% cheaper”, reported France 3.
