Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire brings the Triwizard Tournament to Hogwarts and ultimately resurrects Voldemort in a new body. Part 4 is one of the thickest books in JK Rowling’s novel series. As a result, not only did the tournament have to be changed and shortened for the film, but many other storylines also had to be removed. One particularly controversial element that the 4th film left out was Hermione’s League for Elven Rights (B.ELFE.R).
What is Hermione’s Belfer in Harry Potter?
House elves serve wizarding families and are often treated like slaves. We learn this in the second Harry Potter part, where Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) frees Dobby from the Malfoys’ service with a sock. He also later inherits the house elf Kreacher from the Black family. What Harry Potter 4 withholds from us as a film is Hermione’s commitment to oppressed house elves at Hogwarts. Emma Watson’s character actually founds an aid organization called Belfer.

Harry Potter house elf Dobby
In the book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire * we find out that There are over 100 house elves secretly working at Hogwarts. For example, in the underground kitchen they prepare the dishes that then appear on the tables in the Great Hall. At night, the gnome-like helpers come secretly to clean the common areas. Because they are in hiding, most students are unaware of their existence. But when Hermione Granger finds out about them, she promptly calls them
Association for Elven Rights (B.ELFE.R) into life.
The trigger for Hermione’s founding of Belfer is her encounter with Bartemis Crouch’s house elf Winky during the Quidditch World Cup. The loyal servant is fired with a gift of clothing and then comes to Hogwarts to work. Unlike Dobby, who enjoys his freedom, her release is a disgrace for Winky. Because Most house elves don’t want to be free at all.

Harry Potter 7.1: the house elves Dobby & Kreacher
Hermione is still committed to house elf rights with B.ELFE.R: she wants them in Harry Potter 4 unpaid creatures receive a wage, fixed working hours, vacation and social security. In her manifesto she also states that house elves should be given better status in the wizarding world in the long term (e.g. through the legal possession of a magic wand). Hermione appoints Ron as treasurer and Harry as secretary of her new club, although the two join more out of friendship than conviction.
Why is Hermione’s Belfer involvement in Harry Potter 4 so problematic?
Since Hermione Granger’s B.ELFE.R forms its own storyline in the fourth novel, it was easy to remove this element from the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. That the House Elf Liberation Front met with controversy may also have contributed to its omission.

Hermione (Emma Watson) in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
At first glance, Hermione’s commitment to oppressed creatures is laudable: Emma Watson’s Harry Potter character stands up for the weaker and thus shows a political activism that already refers to her later job as Minister for Magic *.
The only problem is that Miss Granger stands up for them against the will of the house elves. The creatures are proud of their servant status and quickly begin to avoid Hermione when the Hogwarts student tries to free them. She doesn’t hear the concerns of the creatures it “protects.” and only wants to enforce what she thinks is right.
Additionally, the way Hermione approaches her Belfer goals is problematic. Because no one is interested in their organization, She besieges her annoyed friends until they join the club. Enlisted members like Neville cave in under their harassment only to be left alone. In terms of character, this doesn’t shed the best light on Hermione Granger and so Mike Newell’s Goblet of Fire film team ended up cutting the B.ELFE.R political issue entirely from the Harry Potter adaptation.
We will only find out in a few years whether the remake of the announced Harry Potter series will film the house elf debate that is still hotly debated among fans.
