To scare away burglars, technology is always going further! This strange camera, called Eve, has a formidable method to scare them away. At the risk of bordering on illegality.

When you leave your home, whether to go to work or to go on vacation, you may be overcome by a very legitimate anxiety: the fear of being robbed. In fact, sometimes it only takes a few minutes for malicious people to break into your home to steal the valuable items that are there. This is why connected cameras and other security systems are becoming more and more popular. They have a whole host of options to scare off prowlers, from a loud siren to blinding flashes. But Slovenian startup PaintCam has created what might just be the most fearsome security camera ever.

Named Eve, this camera is not a saint! It incorporates a home security system powered by artificial intelligence that fires paintballs, like in paintball, as well as tear gas grenades at intruders, as can be seen in an incredible demonstration videos. Enough to deter many burglars and teach them to respect private property the hard way!

Computer vision technology allows the system to operate day or night, and to recognize the faces of the people it films as well as animals. In short, you won’t – in theory – get shot when you get home. You can easily add your loved ones to a list of authorized people via an application. If a stranger shows up at your home accompanied by a person on the list, Eve will send you a notification and ask you what to do: take a photo of him, shoot him or let him pass? Finally, if an unidentified person appears alone on your property, the camera will emit the following sound message: “You are identified as an unauthorized person. You have five seconds to leave the property!” If the person ignores his warnings, the camera will take care of making him go away, taking care to record the scene on the cloud.

“When you want to guarantee security, being passive is not enough”says PaintCam. “Let us dare to imagine a world where security is not just a passive observer but an active guardian.” While there is no doubt about the effectiveness of the system and its concept should interest many people, Eve risks raising many ethical questions. We’re not even sure if such a camera is legal! Because even if they are not lethal munitions, the use of paintballs and tear gas can still expose the user to legal consequences. Especially in the event of injury, because these projectiles are far from harmless… The start-up is currently organizing a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter, which should end in a few weeks – the date has already been pushed back.
