To relax from everyday life, I work at the checkout in a supermarket on Steam

In her free time, MeinMMO editor Jasmin Beverungen meets with her friends in the supermarket. However, not in reality, but in a free game on Steam. There she can relax by beating customers, sweeping trash and stocking the shelves.

I usually relax after work with quiet games like farming simulations in which I work my fields and look for true love. But lately I’ve been fascinated by a game on Steam that’s the complete opposite.

In Supermarket Together you can run your own supermarket. At first it doesn’t sound like much excitement, but it’s the details that make the game so interesting: it can be played with up to 16 people and is completely free.

I’m not the only one who is completely fascinated by the title. The free game has a whopping 93% positive ratings on Steam and offers more than meets the eye at first glance. I had incredible fun with the tasks that arise in a supermarket.

Sweep, put away, beat up, have fun

Supermarket Together simulates the everyday life of supermarket employees. This involves the typical tasks that cannot be managed alone:

  • First, the supermarket must be set up and stocked with food. The cash register should not be missing.
  • As soon as goods run out, they have to be reordered. If you are in a hurry, the goods must be put on the shelves as soon as they arrive.
  • The remaining food is stacked in a warehouse. It is important to keep an overview.
  • The customers have to be cashed in. Depending on whether you pay in cash or by card, you will have to proceed differently.
  • Every now and then people are so cheeky and throw their rubbish into the aisles or even steal food. The broom becomes your best friend – whether as a cleaning product or as a weapon.

    • Since we played with 4 people, everyone could devote themselves to a different task. After cashing out proved difficult for me (after all, you have to give out change quickly!), I grabbed the broom, swept the aisles, and beat up anyone who dared to steal food.

    Each player can choose which area they want to work in.

    During the game, sentences were said that are typically heard in the supermarket. Between “Garbage in aisle 2” or “The vegetable lasagne needs to be refilled” we barely had time to talk about personal stuff. Even at the end of the day, we all stood in the staff room and thought together about where we would invest the money we had won from the day.

    The motivating thing about the game is the huge pool of unlockable features. It is regularly possible to expand your store and add new foods to the range. After the store closes, you can then philosophize about where which food belongs.

    No stress, just deep relaxation

    I had a lot of fun with Supermarket Together and the time flew by. As soon as everyone has discovered a task that they enjoy, the supermarket day runs smoothly and everyone can relax in their task. Knocking out thieves, sweeping and looking for the food on the shelves was my best way to pass the time.

    The tasks were so monotonous that it became second nature to me. Another player found it relaxing to stand at the checkout. What for me degenerated into strenuous mental arithmetic was for him pure relaxation. So everyone can get their money’s worth in Supermarket Together.

    Even if the look isn’t exactly the prettiest, I can recommend the Steam game to everyone. Especially because it is completely free. For €5 you can get new cosmetics, dances and more. But even without this DLC I had fun in the supermarket.
