    According to a study conducted by an American university, women who consume an avocado daily have a reduction in visceral abdominal fat.

    Lose belly by eating an avocado a day? This is the result of a study conducted by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (USA). To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed 105 overweight and obese adults for 12 weeks. Women who consumed an avocado daily had a reduction in visceral abdominal fat. No changes were reported for men.

    “The goal was not to lose weight; we wanted to understand what the connection is between avocado consumption and how individuals store their body fat. The location of fat in the body plays an important role in health”, explained Naiman Khan, the professor of kinesiology who led this study.

    Before adding : “In the abdomen, there are two types of fat: fat that accumulates just under the skin, called subcutaneous fat, and fat that accumulates deeper in the abdomen, called visceral fat, which surrounds internal organs. Deeper visceral fat tends to be at higher risk of developing diabetes, so we wanted to determine whether the ratio of subcutaneous fat to visceral fat changes with avocado consumption.”

    The researchers said they wanted to do a follow-up study to look at additional markers of gut health and overall physical health to verify the metabolic effects of avocado.

    “By taking our research further, we will be able to get a clearer picture of the types of people who would benefit the most from incorporating avocado into their diets and provide valuable data for healthcare professionals to provide patients advice on how to reduce fat storage and the potential dangers of diabetes”, concludes study co-author Richard Mackenzie, professor of human metabolism at the University of Roehampton in London.
