Finding a working tactic is much easier in EA FC 25, but at the same time more difficult. At least you can blame your coach. He is responsible for how you play. That’s why the coaching job in MeinMMO author Thomas Dummer’s club is at least as vacant as the one at Schalke 04.
Football fans know how it goes: When the game of the club you love goes badly wrong and the players don’t deliver the performance you think is appropriate, the viewer mutates into the “best coach in the world”. He then knows exactly where a player has to run, which formation the coach should choose and which player changes could bring about the turning point.
This attitude of knowing everything better than the actual coach is something that some people will also live out in EA FC – and I can’t shirk responsibility for that either.
EA FC connoisseurs and hobby trainers know: the tactics of game simulation can quickly become a science in its own right. And that has to be the case somehow. Who will give me the panacea for which of the 30 different lineups in FC 25 to choose? Each lineup also has 3 different construction styles and 4 different defensive approaches. You can sometimes lose track of things.
Luckily, Ultimate Team now has a new addition to help you keep track of this hodgepodge of lineups, setup styles, and defensive approaches. The coach is now more than just a supplier of your team chemistry.
Finally, coaches in Ultimate Team have a job to do
Even in FC 24, every real team had its own tactical concept, which I could simply play with the default settings in the offline modes such as kick-off or the online seasons. However, this did not apply to the most popular and at the same time most competitive mode in EA FC 25, Ultimate Team.
But that’s over in FC 25. Each trainer item, bronze, silver or gold, comes with its pre-built settings for Ultimate Team, which you can activate and play immediately when you assign the trainer to your manager position.
Especially at the beginning of Ultimate Team in FC 25 I thought to myself: “Great, then I just need a good trainer and the rest is up to my ability or inability.” Luckily, I also got a rare gold trainer from my first packs . Sam Dyche from Everton FC in the English Premier League:
So quickly select the coach as manager for the team, adopt his tactics and put the right players in the positions. Finally get started without sitting at the tactics board for hours. Football on the console can be so easy, I thought – but I was wrong.
Self-doubt is a thing of the past: it’s the coach’s fault!
Despite a few victories, the first games were quite bumpy, which was of course also because I had to get used to FC 25 and was only able to field 11 suitable gold players without a lot of team chemistry.
But even after a few games and with better players, I began to feel dissatisfied. Especially with my coach and his tactics. Finally, the know-it-all hobby trainer in me came through again and I thought that there was something wrong with the line-up.
So I looked at how Everton FC performed in the Premier League under Sam Dyche: “There we have it. Second to last place with one point after 5 games. So it’s clear why my players are having so much trouble on the pitch.”
New coach should bring improvement through offensive football
For coach Dyche, at least at my club, his time was over. Low-lying teams that look for counterattacks might just not be for me. I needed a new approach, preferably with a new setup. And the beacon of hope was quickly found: Roger Schmidt.
Schmidt should bring a completely different approach, a 4-4-1-1 that is more offensive and variable in its structure. And that’s what the first game under the new coach felt like. I was finally able to play my way forward over several stations and had more chances and goals.
At least the Squad Battles mode against computer-controlled opponents was no longer a problem with the new trainer and his tactics. But for me the real fun in Ultimate Team lies in competing with other, real players.
A clear defeat seals the quick end for Schmidt
I felt prepared for the first games in Division Rivals. Although there is a different level in Division 5 and opponents with much better teams, I had confidence in my players and my tactics – even if it was against real opponents.
After two defeats in a row and a 3-0 half-time deficit in the third game, I realized that my offensive approach with full-backs pushed up and attack-minded midfielders was far too vulnerable when the ball was lost.
After a 2:5 defeat, Roger Schmidt’s adventure, which had started so promisingly, was over again.
My coaching wear is worse than at Schalke 04
I have now tried out over 20 different trainers and tactics. In contrast, the employment relationship at FC Schalke 04 almost seems like a secure job. The traditional club from the Ruhr area managed to dismiss 10 coaches in the past 5 years.
However, I am one step ahead of Schalke. I now know which formation I can get along well with. At least for now.
In the end, I decided against a coach and his fixed tactics and now play with a narrow diamond in the 4-1-2-1 formation and was at least able to celebrate my promotion to Division 4. I’m currently well on my way to Division 3.
Finally, it should be noted that it was probably not just the tactics of the coaches. Even though no coach could really provide me with a suitable tactic, I was still inspired by one or two of them.
