To date Baldur’s Gate 3’s biggest joke, I turned down two of its hottest companions

Baldur’s Gate 3 shines with its diverse available romance options and MeinMMO editor Sophia’s character is showered with offers of love. But because she chose the biggest loser, she even gives out baskets to the hottest companions.

Of all people, Gale from Waterdeep makes my character starve to death on his rather long arm. He actually wasn’t my first choice. Like many others, I initially turned my attention to a certain vampire.

The wizard is quite a joke in the community and numerous memes make fun of him. He is known for eating magical items and constantly talking about his ex. There was also a bug that caused Gale to immediately jump at you if you just said a friendly word.

Even the studio, Larian itself, makes fun of the Waterdeep mage:

To win Gale’s favor, you must give him magical items to consume as soon as he asks. Play a generally friendly, helpful character and also show an interest in magic and his cat Tara and ta-da: Gale is at your feet

I fully believe that Gale’s approval of my character went up so quickly because of the known bugs surrounding the romances.

Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten beyond a few conversation cutscenes since then. Finally, he let my character know how nice it was to fight side by side.

Hurray, I thought, maybe we can finally make this official. Wrong thought.

With words like that you’d think he was in a hurry. But no…

How I set out to turn down the two nicest companions

Early in Act 2 you have the opportunity to make significant steps in the relationships of your companions Wyll and Karlach. These two are the friendliest companions for me:

They have no hidden agenda and just want to be there for your Tav. That’s exactly why I’m so sorry that I rejected both of them, even though they were never my main focus.

To romance Karlach you have to play a “good” Tav like Gale. Also, support her in all her projects and show absolute enthusiasm when you talk to her. You also have to upgrade with infernal iron from Blacksmith Dammon in the Emerald Grove and in Act 2 in the House of the Last Light.

If you’ve done everything right by then, she’ll invite you to a hot night at camp. But first you should show that you are not afraid of contact – kiss her or hug her.

Karlach is really great: wild, hot-blooded but always warm and sensitive.

With Wyll, I actually don’t know how I got the honor of a dance: I was basically just nice to him too. I spoke to him when he felt the need. We are also still looking for his father, for which I have promised him support.

He probably particularly liked my attempt to free him from his warlock pact with Mizora. Two long rests later he invited everyone for an elegant dance and a kiss.

There were a few dice checks to pass in the scene – I got lucky!

I want! But somehow not?

Both offers from both characters came more or less as a surprise. But neither Wyll nor Karlach were the object of my desire.

I’m still trying to win Gale over.

So I did what all good Baldur’s Gate 3 players do: I saved before the important decisions and then indulged in the intimate moments on offer. Only to reload like a mauled dog given the “break up” dialogue option with Gale.

As sad as the broken hearts made me, the romantic scenes were just as beautiful! I can therefore highly recommend this tactic.

I don’t even want to talk about what the hell is going on with the Protector.

And what’s next for Gale?

As sorry as I am for Wyll and Karlach… the die is cast and I will live with my decision to have rejected them.

I was surprised that I ended up with Gale of all people! He just has this goofy golden retriever energy and tries so hard to please. Even if he looks so sad when you reject him. What should I do? I just succumbed to that.

As long as Wyll and Karlach stay in my party and I can continue to help them with their personal quests, I’m happy.

However, neither my Tav nor I are willing to wait forever for a certain magician. We can overlook the fact that he talks about his ex too often and we somehow still get his mansplaining.

POV: Gale explains to you (again without being asked) how the world works.

But if he doesn’t pull himself together and take the next step until the shadow curse is (hopefully) lifted, I already have a back-up: If everything goes well, Druid Halsin will join my squad.

I like Halsin and keep my fingers crossed that I complete all the quests correctly so that I can recruit him. He is also one of the two participants from the famous bear sex scene. But I want to keep a veil of silence about what I want to do with him.
