In the second season of the Amazon series Reacher, the series creators deviated from the book and broke one of Reacher’s rules. As the series creator revealed in an interview, the author of the novels behind Reacher had previously been contacted and asked whether the change fit into the concept of the character.
Danger! Minor spoilers for season 2 of Reacher follow. If you haven’t seen it yet and don’t want to anticipate anything, then you shouldn’t read any further.
In the second season there is a reunion with an important supporting character from season 1. This doesn’t actually appear in the book on which the Amazon series is based.
As the series creator Nick Santora told in an interview with TVline on January 19, 2024, he clarified the change with the author of the books, Lee Child, to make sure that it fits into the figure concept of the protagonist.

Reunion with Finlay as a deviation from the original
Nick Santora emphasized that he was fully aware that Jack Reacher was a loner and did not ask others for help:
“The rules say Reachers don’t travel with a crew. The 110 is his crew. This is his family. These are his military colleagues, but he wanders the world alone. So we know we can’t have Reacher with a group of people going from city to city with him. That’s not in the book.”
However, the production team wanted to take the action out of New York and add some variety, moving the series to Boston. So they thought about which character was currently in Boston.
Then they thought of Oscar Finlay, an important supporting character from Reacher season 1, who they had established would be heading back to Boston.
Therefore, Nick Santora contacted the book author Lee Child to clarify the deviation from the original:
“I turned to Lee Child because he’s ‘The Godfather,’ he created this world. I asked, ‘If Reacher was in the same town as someone he was adventuring with, someone like Finlay, and he needed help stopping bad people from doing bad things, would he come forward?'”
Lee Child said yes. However, he also made it clear that Reacher would not say, “Come join my band of merry men.”
Instead, the character would only ask for help subtly and for a brief moment.
As our colleagues from Moviepilot reported, there was a big criticism of the 2nd season of Reacher: The fact that Jack Reacher was on the move in the team was criticized and there was something as the main character.
However, the author Lee Child already promised that the character would become a loner again in the third season and that the story would focus more on Jack Reacher, who is on his own.
