Two people have been taken to hospital after a slide in the Källö tunnel on Tjörnbron, when a large stone hit their car.

The bridge is closed in both directions.

The accident happened just before 11pm on Friday evening and the cause of the slide is believed to have been a lightning strike at the tunnel, which connects Tjörn to the mainland.

It was unclear at 00:30 how seriously injured the people are.

– It was a very large stone and it hit their car right. I don’t know how seriously injured they are, but two people were traveling in the car and they have been taken to hospital, says Johan Eklund, alarm and line operator at the rescue service.

Tjörnbron is now closed in both directions until further notice and it is unclear when it can be opened again.

– We remain at the site and maintain the roadblocks until the Swedish Transport Administration gets its own resources there. Experts will also come to the site to assess whether it is possible to use the tunnel, says Johan Eklund.
