Do you prefer to eat your bananas not too ripe? You bought a bunch of bananas? Here is a trick that could be very useful to prevent your bananas from ripening too quickly and turning black.
The banana is a fruit very popular with the French. Combining pleasure and health, this fruit is very nutritious and easily carried everywhere in a bag. But for many it is a real headache to keep them because they tend to ripen very quickly and can turn black very quickly, especially in hot weather. It is therefore quite normal to look for simple tips to keep them longer.
Our first advice is not to put them next to other fruits. Certain fruits such as apples, kiwis, pears, peaches, tomatoes or even avocados release ethylene gas which accelerates the ripening of fruits and vegetables. The best way to store them after shopping is to remove them from their plastic bag and hang them from a hook on the wall or ceiling. This trick improves air circulation around the fruit, thus reducing the action of ethylene gas.
Before hanging them, remember to wrap the tails of the bananas in plastic film. This will prevent air from entering the fruit and therefore causing them to ripen too quickly. Fruit will stay fresh longer.
If you don’t want to hang your bananas, here’s a final handy tip. Place a cork in your fruit basket. It will absorb moisture and therefore prevent the fruit from ripening too quickly. Another advantage: its smell will scare away midges.
The mistake not to make: store your bananas in the refrigerator when they are not yet ripe. This will completely stop ripening. The skin may darken, but the banana will remain green inside. Result: an inedible banana!
