Tilbury firm able to remove most tar before it hardened on vandalized equipment

An estimated $100,000 in damage from tar being smeared on 49 tractors and skid steers at a Tilbury equipment dealership could have been even worse if not for a timely cleanup.

Oliveira Equipment was the target of vandalism when tar spread over the equipment on Sunday about 5 am, Chatham-Kent police say.

“It was all hands on deck to try to get it (cleaned up),” owner Steve Oliveira said Wednesday.

A crew of about 10 tackled the job on the large site at 147 Queen St. N., he said

“We actually spent the majority of that day (Sunday) and evening pressure washing, using chemicals. . . and removed the majority of it,” Oliveira said.

The value of the damaged inventory is between $1 million and $1.5 million, he said.

Fortunately, it was caught early enough the tar didn’t harden onto the machinery.

“With some chemicals, pressing washing and the works. . . we had equipment here that helped us out a lot,” he said.
