The Canadian federal government has requested that TikTok cease operations in the country due to national security concerns. However, this decision will not prevent Canadians from accessing the popular social media app.
After Canada, Albania also took action. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said that they should make a radical decision to completely legalize TikTok and Snapchat in Albania.
“WE MUST MAKE A GRAND DECISION LIKE BANNING TIKTOK”
In his statement following the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Rama emphasized that the death of a 14-year-old student was a tragedy that required an effective response from the state and the public.
Stating that children under the age of 16 have limited access to social networks in some countries, Rama said, “Our dilemma as a government is whether we should move forward with applying filters. In all experiences so far, we have learned that the effectiveness of these filters is very low and that incentives for violence and bullying in the online world are only increasing. Maybe “We must make a radical decision to completely ban TikTok and Snapchat in Albania.” he said.
Rama said the proposal will be presented to parents for discussion and all schools will work to make a decision as democratic as possible. Speaking about the measures to be taken to ensure security in schools, Rama noted that soon every school and classroom will be monitored with cameras.
Martin Cani, a 14-year-old student at Fan Noli Primary School in Tirana, the capital of Albania, died in a knife attack by another student on November 18. It was claimed that the discussion between students started on social media. On the other hand, tomorrow in Tirana, parents who are concerned about the safety of their students will march from Fan Noli Primary School to the Ministry of Education and Sports.
