There has been a new development in the USA’s TikTok war. The US Supreme Court approved the law banning TikTok in the country. Stating that the law did not violate freedom of expression rights, the court ruled that the US government had raised legitimate national security concerns regarding the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns the application. The law will come into force as of January 19.
IT WAS APPROVED LAST YEAR WITH 360 VOTES
Last year, the US House of Representatives approved the bill, with 360 votes against 58, to ban TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, in the country unless its US assets are sold to another company. Michael McCaul, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said after the vote: “This bill protects Americans, and especially American children, from the bad influence of Chinese propaganda on the TikTok application. “This application is a spy bubble on Americans’ phones,” he said.
HE SAID “THE CONSTITUTION IS ON OUR SIDE”
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew stated that they expect to win the legal fight they launched to block the law approved by US President Joe Biden and said, “Rest assured, we are not going anywhere. “The facts and the Constitution are on our side and we hope to prevail again,” he said.
