Tiktok appeals to US Supreme Court to stop forced selling

App stores are scheduled to remove Tiktok from their selections in the US on January 19.

Chinese video service Tiktok is asking the US Supreme Court to temporarily block a law that would force Bytedance, which owns the service, to leave the country or sell its US operations.

The US Congress passed the law earlier in April. According to the country’s Ministry of Justice, Tiktok is a threat to national security, as the application collects information about users and processes its content, which it shows to US consumers.

The company has tried to delay the entry into force of the law through the courts. In early December, the US Court of Appeals in Washington DC rejected Tiktok’s appeal that the law violates freedom of speech. Now Tiktok is trying to challenge the decision of the lower court in question.

News channel CNN’s according to the future president of the United States Donald Trump’s is scheduled to meet Tiktok’s CEO in Florida Shou Zi Chew local time on Monday. During his election campaign, Trump promised to try to save Tiktok.

App stores are scheduled to remove Tiktok from their selections in the US on January 19. Trump, on the other hand, takes office the day after the deadline.

Tiktok has about 170 million users in the United States.
