“The enemy has already regrouped a massive force to (neighboring) Eritrea, and has now launched a joint military operation with Eritrea’s invasion force,” the liberation front TPLF states.
“They intend to use brutal violence and exterminate the people of Eritrea,” the movement continued in a statement on Thursday.
Spokesman Kindeya Gebrehiwot said to a question from the French news agency AFP that “the attacks are coming from Eritrea”.
Additional TPLF sources said the invasion is being carried out on four fronts.
Independent sources cannot confirm the information as the region of Tigray has been isolated from outside communication for the past year.
The conflict in Ethiopia began in November 2020, when Ethiopian government forces captured Tigray. The conflict concerns, among other things, the governance in Tigray. The TPLF, which previously ruled the region, stated that it no longer recognized the legitimacy of the Ethiopian central government. The TPLF, in turn, claims that the central regime launched the invasion following false allegations of arms depots in Tigray.
The invasion data comes a day after airstrikes were carried out against Mekele, the capital of Tigray, and then the cease-fire reached in March was broken on several occasions.
