Tightened requirements for citizenship – the waiting period is increased by three years

The requirements to become a Swedish citizen will be greatly tightened, TV4 Nyheterna learns.
Today, the waiting period is normally five years, but this time will be increased to eight years.
The increase is partly due to requests from Säpo, which wants more time to carry out safety assessments.

At 10 o’clock on Tuesday, Tidöpartierna’s major citizenship investigation will be presented, where the requirements for becoming a Swedish citizen will be tightened on a number of points.

Requirements for sufficient knowledge of the Swedish language and social studies in order to become a Swedish citizen have already been presented. But TV4 Nyheterna learns that it will also require a significantly longer stay in Sweden.
With today’s system, a person who applies to become a Swedish citizen must normally wait for five years. That time is instead proposed to be extended to eight years.

One of the reasons is that the Security Police requested two years longer, because they believe they need more time to make their security assessments. But the investigator will therefore go further than that and propose eight years.

Conduct test

In addition, the investigator has been tasked with proposing requirements for orderly living, so-called vandel. Already today, there is a requirement for an orderly life when applying for Swedish citizenship, but the government’s investigators have looked at whether the requirement can be tightened. The investigator has looked at the possibilities of introducing a requirement that those who want to become Swedish citizens must be able to support themselves.

According to the Government Office, it is estimated that around 87,000 applications for Swedish citizenship will be examined by the Swedish Migration Agency this year and the same number next year, before decreasing to 43,000 in 2027. The new tightened law is expected to enter into force sometime in 2026.
