    Mosquito-tiger: 67 departments placed on red alert

    According to the “Vigilance Moustiques” website, the tiger mosquito has established itself in almost the entire country: 67 departments in France are in red and 6 departments are on orange alert.

    It continues to rise towards the North of France and its population is becoming denser in the Rhone Valley, around Île-de-France and on the Atlantic coast.underlines Elsa Quillery, coordinator of scientific expertise at ANSES, in the columns of Parisian.

    What worry the health authorities because the insect is able to transmit to humans various viruses such as dengue fever, yellow fever, malaria, chikungunya or the zika virus. As a reminder, its first appearance in mainland France dates back to 2004 (Menton).

    The entire population can participate in monitoring this species by declaring its presence on the reporting portal tiger mosquito. Nevertheless, ANSES points out that not all mosquitoes are tiger mosquitoes. Better to learn to recognize it.

    Protecting yourself from the tiger mosquito consists in avoiding bites at home but also when traveling. To do this, a few simple actions can prevent their bites:

    • Wear bright, long and loose clothing;
    • Use repellents;
    • Install mosquito nets on strategic windows and doors: door to outdoor space, windows commonly used for ventilation;
    • With a baby, use a stroller mosquito net;
    • Use a fan (this keeps mosquitoes that are bothered by the wind away);
    • Remove or empty all areas of stagnant water such as pot coasters, waste, gutters.

    According to the Ministry of Solidarity and Health, no measure is 100% effective; “It is the sum of individual and collective measures that reduces transmission”.

    Furthermore, the repeated use of repellents against mosquitoes is not recommended, except in countries where diseases are rife (dengue fever, chikungunya, zika, etc.) or in the event of a local epidemic.
