The day the accident occurred was a perfectly normal day. The man took his morning cigarette in the kitchen while the son ate breakfast, which Home & Rent was the first to report on.
When the man was about to leave home, he flicked the cigarette into the ashtray and poured the ashes into the bin under the sink – something he would later regret.
The hot cigarette started burning in the garbage bag, which spread throughout the apartment.

The fire service had to extinguish the fire
Half an hour later, the man received a call that his apartment was on fire and had to rush home to hand over the keys to the emergency services, who then had to put out the fire.

Forced to pay an expensive bill
The man, on the other hand, does not completely agree that the fire started because of the cigarette, but he believes that it must have been an exploding microwave that started the fire.
Although he does not admit that it was the cigarette’s fault, he admits that he did not double check that the cig was out when he emptied the ashtray into the garbage.
However, the technical evidence contradicts the man’s story, as it is clear that the fire started under the sink.
The whole party ended with an expensive bill for the man, who was sentenced to daily fines and damages to the municipal housing company Aktiebolaget Bostäder in Borås in the amount of SEK 727,234.
The man still denies any crime and has appealed the damages.
