Throne and Liberty: Testers report on the secret beta of the new MMORPG

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

A beta for Throne and Liberty took place in Korea. This was actually provided with a non-disclosure agreement so that nothing leaks out. But testers still report on their experience and some points make us skeptical.

What do the testers say? Around 100 people in Korea were probably invited to the “final beta” in February. They were able to test the new MMORPG and are said to have even received an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 as a reward. Officially, they are not allowed to talk about the experience, but some information leaked out, for example on reddit or in Korean forums:

  • There is harsh criticism of the combat system, which is too static and boring.
  • The story is supposed to be more of a kind of summary of the events and generally very erratic.
  • The big focus in the endgame is on PvP. There should also be open PvP at night without a karma system.
  • There will probably be XP and loot drop boosts.
  • The monetization model relied on “buy time”. Exactly what that means is difficult to say due to possible translation errors. TL either relies on Free2Play with a shop that brings with it many time reductions, such as in Lost Ark, or on a subscription.
  • Throne and Liberty, on the other hand, gets praise for the graphics in particular. It’s supposed to be a “9.8 out of 10”. For example, you can see the character’s mouth speaking realistically in dialogue. The character editor and the “interactive environment” are also praised. However, there are no statements about the unique weather system.

The information given here should be taken with a pinch of salt as there is no guarantee that people actually took the test. However, the criticism of the combat system in particular can be understood in the trailers.

Combat system relies on long animations and little movement

What do the testers say about the combat system? Throne and Liberty uses tab targeting and is intended to be very static overall. Around 80% of abilities should not allow you to move while you are casting them. So you’re just standing around in one place. You should be able to place AoE effects on one target, which will then hit several.

However, some animations should last quite a long time, which should take the fun out of melee fighters in particular. So opponents can probably simply dodge or run away during the long animations and are not hit at all.

For long-distance players and magicians, however, this shouldn’t be such a big problem, because your abilities are aimed at the enemies.

What do the testers say about the story? There are three somewhat different statements here, but they do not necessarily have to contradict each other:

  • A user says that the story is just a summary of events. You learn something more about the background of the world. It’s not cheesy, but a bit erratic.
  • Another user says that NCSoft did “everything in their power” to adapt the story for the EU and NA western players and pick them up.
  • Another says she’s “better than nothing”.
  • Previously, NCSoft itself emphasized that PvE and story would play an important role in TL. It sounds a little different in these three statements.

PvP is also a topic of discussion. So there should be PvP events in which you can kill other players. There will also be a “karma system” on player kills. This karma system is disabled at night (3 hours day, 1 hour night, always in cycle) (via ThisIsGame). This could mean that open PvP is possible at night without consequences, which would probably scare many PvE fans.

Amazon is bringing Throne and Liberty to the West

When will we finally find out more about Throne and Liberty? NCSoft has so far held back with official statements and gameplay videos. Although there is no specific release date, the developers emphasized in February that the MMORPG should come in the first half of 2023.

Since Throne and Liberty is based on a global version, the release should also take place in the West during this period. Incidentally, Amazon is responsible for publishing in the West. After New World, Lost Ark and Blue Protocol, they bring us the fourth new MMORPG. However, apart from the publishing deal, Amazon has not shared any new information about the game either.

What do you think of the statements of the testers? Would the MMORPG continue to be of interest to you, or does that scare you off?
