Throne and Liberty is only 54 percent positive on Steam, Peak is well behind Lost Ark and New World

There is no second chance to make a good first impression. Like many MMORPGs before it, Throne and Liberty now has to struggle with this well-known motto.

How is Throne and Liberty doing at launch? The early start phase was already technically mixed, and this was also the picture presented to the players on the launch evening. Many interested parties had problems getting onto the servers or creating characters.

Some of the existing characters from the early start had disappeared, and some of the units of the real money currency Luzent were said to have disappeared. In addition, the server capacities were so low at the beginning that at times all European servers were blocked from creating new characters.

Community punishes problematic launch

How did Amazon Games react? The publisher opened additional servers at regular intervals and increased server capacities. There was also a maintenance phase for the European auction house in order to fix a problem there.

As far as other technical issues are concerned, so far there has only been official notification that the developers are addressing certain errors. It is currently unclear whether and when solutions will be available.

What is the community’s first impression? Even more mixed than with the early start, which was also problematic. On Steam, the proportion of positive ratings has fallen from 65 to 54 percent (it remains “balanced”), with almost 9,700 reviews.

  • Jan complains in his review on Steam: “Nice game. Worked perfectly during Early Access until today when the developers updated the game and disabled Linux and Steamdeck support. The anti-cheat will now block you immediately when you register.”
  • Herman takes it with humor that he didn’t get on the servers (via Steam): “I didn’t know that this game was just a character creation simulator. Unfortunately, there’s no save button, so I can’t look back on all the beautiful waifus I’ve created so far.”
  • Menu_Dizzy felt the same way (via Reddit): “Tons of crashes. I’ve been trying to play for 4 hours but I can’t even get through character creation.”
  • MeinMMO reader Andre also had to struggle (via comment under the launch ticker): “So I can’t get into the game, it’s good that Amazon screwed it up again and with just under 290k players.”
  • But it’s not just the technical problems with the launch that are criticized.

  • Shitbone writes in his review on Steam: “The gameplay feels uneven, the combat is repetitive, and frankly I don’t particularly like it. The graphics are good, but the world in general feels boring.”
  • AdventjX also finds clear words (via Steam): “Boring story, no memorable characters, lackluster quests, rough fights, Ubisoft-level interface with bright lights + SFX to make you think you’re making great progress until you get to P2W Monetization is being invaded.”
  • Zone_Ghost_Hero says on Steam: “Throne and Liberty is unfortunately the kind of game that is all too similar to many other Korean MMORPGs. […] The mechanics are shallow, taxes are high and returns are diminishing, making progress unbearably slow.”
  • For some players, just the fact that a new MMORPG starts is a great experience:

Is there only criticism? First of all, we can say that with the launch, Throne and Liberty was able to increase the previous early launch peak many times over, to currently 326,377 simultaneously active players on Steam. In addition, there are everyone who played the MMORPG on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series.

The truth is that the respective all-time peaks of New World (913,634) and Lost Ark (1,325,305) – the other two MMORPGs published by Amazon Games in the West – were significantly higher. Despite all the criticism and the technical launch problems, there are many players who are already having fun with Throne and Liberty.

  • nikutx writes on Steam: “This game is absolutely fantastic! After playing for 64 hours, here’s what I love: Lots of quests to keep you busy for hours. Impressive open world with so much to explore. Dynamic weather patterns and a day-night cycle that contributes to the atmosphere.”
  • DEATH also has more than 50 hours on the clock and explains on Steam: “Fantastic. Just entertaining. F2P with a tiny P2W feature. […] Teleportation in the game is seamless and has no loading screens. […] The gameplay loop is satisfying, with the main focus of the game being building your guild, alliances and waging wars.”
  • Lancelot1775 is excited about Steam: “The game is really good and I’m enjoying it so far. I was worried about all the reviews before release, but they turned out to be wrong. I’m only level 20 so far, but I’m really enjoying it!”
