Thrilling sci fi hit flopped completely wrongly and leading actor

As a comic figure, he drives grim Sci-fi cop Judge Dredd been up to mischief since the 1970s. In 1995 he was played by Sylvester Stallone in the film of the same name. When the brand was dusted off almost two decades later and brought back to the big screen, hardly anyone appeared in the cinema.

The 2012 Dredd film flopped at the box office. Neither the banging action nor the brilliant 3D could convince large crowds to buy a ticket. On a budget of $30-45 million, the reboot, led by Lord of the Rings star Karl Urban, only grossed $41 million again.

  • Today on TV: Dredd is on RTL ZWEI tonight at 10:15 p.m. The repetition follows at 01:50 at night.
  • Flopped sci-fi highlight: Karl Urban names the reason why Dredd failed in the cinema

Though Dredd went down in Hollywood history as a financial disappointment (those who invest such sums expect at least double or triple the box office gross), the film has had one in recent years very loyal fan base found who is hoping for a sequel starring Urban.

Urban himself knows exactly why the film flopped in cinemas. In an interview with Den of Geek in 2016, he stated:

The film was not a failure. In fact, the reviews were very good. [Dredd] just failed to impress at the box office. But how does a film that gets 78 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes fail? That’s because that audience didn’t know. No one knew the film would be released. Dredd represents a failure in marketing, not filmmaking. Hope dies last: At the end of 2022 we received the news that after more than a decade the sequel should still be implemented. If all goes according to plan, Urban will return in Dredd 2. We really hope that this time it really works, because the first part is one of the best sci-fi action movies at all.

The action of Dredd takes place almost entirely in a futuristic skyscraper. At the beginning we come in through the door below and fight together with Urban from one floor to the next. From this simple premise, a powerful, uncompromising and sometimes even touching firework of action emerges.
