Anyone who only knows the secret agent’s everyday life from James Bond films will be amazed at the outstanding film adaptation of the novel Dame König As Spion. Director Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation shows the life of spying much more realistically and believably. The thriller masterpiece, which runs on ARD on Saturday at 11:50 p.m., turns the blockbuster show values of the Bond series into hell.
Queen King As Spy is a highly complex espionage study
The action of the John le Carré film takes place in England in 1973 during the Cold War. Here, master spy George Smiley (Gary Oldman) must come out of retirement to track down a double agent within British Intelligence. In the search for clues, there is also a duel between Smiley and his old Russian opponent “Karla”.
While the James Bond films celebrate the life of espionage with spectacular action sets, exotic locations and romantic adventures, Dame König As Spion is the radical alternative. Alfredson coldly and precisely describes everyday life in which sobering bureaucracy reacts while constant Paranoia and isolated loneliness master every character in the plot’s confusion.
Over the course of the 127-minute runtime, Dame König As Spion unfolds as an extremely complex thriller drama that demands your attention every second. If you are not careful, you could miss a crucial development.
Persistence, however, will be rewarded with a masterful espionage puzzle, the Alfredson like a rousing game of chess staged. There are also stars like Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Firth, who make Lady King As a Spy a genre masterpiece with great acting performances.
