Deke (Washington), a talented rural sheriff, is on the trail of a serial killer who has already murdered six women. Together with the young city detective Baxter (Rami Malek) they want to catch the perpetrator. Baxter quickly realizes that his colleague has a talent for the small details, but he doesn’t take the rules too seriously.
Deke also seems to be struggling with dark secrets from the past, which makes him increasingly uncontrollable. When the shady Albert (Jared Leto) becomes the target of the investigation, events take over.
Steven Spielberg turned down Thriller because of Schindler’s List
Last year, the dark thriller landed at number 2 on Netflix’s streaming charts. So he managed to achieve a late triumph, after the material lay on ice for almost three decades. Director John Lee Hancock had already written the script in 1993 Steven Spielberg, among others, was offered (via Deadline). But he had just finished Schindler’s List and wanted to concentrate on something easier.
Clint Eastwood is also said to have looked at the manuscript before it disappeared into obscurity. In 2019, Hancock himself returned to his material and took over the direction. With Washington, Malek and Leto were equal signed three Oscar winnerswhich explore the psychological depths of their characters down to the last detail.
The result is a thriller that creates a lot of tension and a dense atmosphere. The inscrutable figures cause confusion, but also frustration at times. The reviews were mixed, but it’s still worth seeing. Because even if the film may not be remembered, it offers great cast and the gripping plot make for an exciting film evening.
