Three people sentenced to prison for planning an attack on French President Macron

Three members of the far-right-linked group were sentenced to prison, accused of planning and conspiracy to attack French President Emmanuel Macron in 2018.

According to the BBC’s report, the Paris Criminal Court announced the verdict of the trial in which 13 people linked to the far-right group known as “Les Barjols” were tried.

Accordingly, three people linked to the far-right group were sentenced to prison for planning an attack and conspiracy against Macron.

Jean-Pierre Bouyer, 66, one of the defendants on trial, was sentenced to 4 years in prison, while the other two people had a shorter prison term.

It was noted that another of the defendants received a suspended prison sentence of 6 months for possession of a gun.

It was stated that 9 people on trial in the court were acquitted because their connection to the incident could not be proven.

Thirteen people linked to the far-right group known as “Les Barjols” appeared in court on 18 January on charges of “terrorism and conspiracy”.

The defendants, aged between 22 and 66, were tried in November 2018 on charges of plotting an attack on Macron at a memorial service for the First World War, plotting a coup over the phone and in meetings between them, and preparing for acts of violence against immigrants and mosques.

In the investigation that started in 2018, French domestic intelligence teams had access to information that the far-right group Jean-Pierre Bouyer was planning an attack on Macron.

In November 2018, the French police raided and detained three people, including Bouyer, during a meeting.

In the raid, the police seized a bulletproof vest, military knives and equipment, as well as weapons and ammunition in Bouyer’s home, inside the Peugeot 406 vehicle.

Denis Collinet, the so-called 60-year-old leader of the far-right group founded on Facebook in 2017 in France, was detained by the police in 2020. (AA)
