Mats Sundin is one of Swedish hockey’s biggest icons ever.
Now “sudden” talks about its relationship with neighboring Finland – just before both countries collapse in Four Nations.
“It’s a brotherhood and a sibling,” he says at a press conference.
While Tre Kronor began the Four National Adventure in North America by losing against Canada (3-4 after extension), Finland received a big strike (1-6) from the United States. On Saturday, a Nordic duel is expected in Montreal. At 19.00 Swedish time it is Sweden-Finland.

Just a few days before the four -nation tournament started, Beijer Hockey Games was played in newly renovated Avicii Arena. In connection with the mini tournament in Stockholm, Tre Kronor Legends played a charity match against NHL Alumni. When the Toronto Maple Leafs legend Sundin met the overall press, including the Sports Bible, before the match he started talking about old memories linked to the Globe.
– We had a special match against Finland here in the World Cup 1996, which was a very good match that we managed to win. It’s something that stands out, he says, then adds:
-Then I have been involved in won SM gold here with Djurgården as well. It strikes high too.

He is then asked if he is forgiven in Finland for all the goals he has scored against them with Tre Kronor.
– Now it has been so long, so now it is probably forgotten all international matches that I have played, answers Sundin, who then starts to explain that he has a special relationship with the neighboring country in the east.

– I have a mother who is from Tornedalen and who talks meänkieli as a first language, so it is a brotherhood and a sibling. It will be like sibling love, it is hot for a little extra in international matches.
“Finland’s lion” has been strong in recent years. The team won the Olympic gold in 2022 after defeating Russia in the final. The same year they won the World Cup at home.
– In recent years, Finland has shown that they have almost become a big brother now when it comes to international matches and if you look at victories internationally. It will be a tough resistance. Even as usual, says Sundin before the Four Nation match.
