In a video posted by unknown people on social media, two of the missing journalists are seen chained up. One of them says they are “paying the price” for reporting from the violent area.
The area where the journalists disappeared is, according to the organization Reporters Without Borders, “almost 100 percent controlled by a drug cartel.”
Reporters Without Borders, along with other press freedom groups, have now demanded that Mexican authorities immediately find the missing journalists and also take care to protect other media workers in the area.
Mexico is considered one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists. Since 2000, more than 150 journalists have been murdered in the country, according to Reporters Without Borders.
