The disaster quickly spread throughout the building. Several testimonies report that people were calling for help from the windows of the building in which the fire broke out last night. When they arrived, the emergency services noticed that the fire, which was particularly violent, was spreading in the stairwell.
Fifty firefighters and seventeen vehicles were mobilized. By 6 a.m. the fire was out. Despite the rapid intervention of firefighters, the fire killed at least three people. One of the victims jumped from one of the top floors to escape the flames and smoke, reports Nice morning. A seriously burned person was evacuated by helicopter to Toulon. Two other people are in serious condition. Fifteen other people were injured and were transported to hospitals in Grasse and Nice Pasteur. A psychological unit has been set up.
“It’s horrible, a real tragedy”, told Nice-Matin the mayor (LR) of Grasse, Jérôme Viaud. “The investigation will shed light on the causes of the fire.
