This year’s Crafoord prize in astronomy goes to Douglas Gough, Jørgen Christensen-Daalsgard and Conny Aerts, who will share six million kroner.

They receive the award “for the development of the methods of asteroseismology and their applications for the study of the structure of the sun and other stars”, writes the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in a press release.

– Thanks to their efforts, we can now study stars in a completely new way. Previously we were referred to models, but now we have a direct method where we can measure things in the interior of stars, says Bengt Gustafsson, professor emeritus in theoretical astrophysics at Uppsala University and one of the members of the award committee, to Dagens Nyheter.

The Crafoord prize in mathematics is awarded to Claire Voisin, among other things, “for outstanding contributions to complex and algebraic geometry”.

She receives a prize sum of six million kroner.

The prize is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Crafoord Foundation in Lund.
