Thousands protested against tourism in Mallorca

Last year, 14.4 million tourists traveled to the Balearic Islands of which Mallorca is a part. The summers’ intensive tourism has had major consequences for local residents.

Prices for fuel, public transport and electricity have risen and rents have skyrocketed, making it difficult to stay.

Saturday’s demonstration is the second major protest in a short time against tourism’s impact on society. The demonstrators have put forward a series of demands for what they believe is more sustainable tourism and, among other things, want to see a cap on the number of tourist visits to the islands.
