Thousands of people demonstrated across Syria on Wednesday after a video of an attack on an Alawite minority shrine in Aleppo, in the north of the country, went viral on the internet.
The country’s deposed dictator Bashar al-Assad is an Alawite, and Shiite Alawites have feared retaliation since the fall of his regime. The majority of Syrians are Sunnis.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, demonstrations were organized in, for example, Tartus and Latakia, which are the heartlands of the Alawites. In addition, protests were organized in Homs and Jableh, for example, where the authorities imposed a curfew until Thursday morning.
In Homs, one protester was killed and five wounded when security forces opened fire to break up the demonstration, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
