A volcanic eruption in Indonesia’s northern archipelago has prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning, evacuate villages and close an international airport.

Over 11,000 people have been ordered to leave the area, following several major eruptions in the Ruang volcano since Tuesday.

Volcano experts and authorities have warned that parts of the volcano could collapse into the sea and cause a tsunami that could hit coastal areas on nearby islands.

The nearest international airport, located in the city of Manado on the island of Sulawesi, has been closed for at least 24 hours due to the spread of volcanic ash.
