Thousands demonstrated in Serbia demanding annulment of election result

According to an eyewitness of the Reuters news agency, the police sprayed the protesters with tear gas after the crowd tried to enter the Belgrade City Hall.

Thousands of people gathered in the center of the Serbian capital Belgrade on Sunday to demand the annulment of the results of the parliamentary and local elections held a week ago.

According to preliminary information, no one was injured in the unrest.

According to an eyewitness of the news agency Reuters, the police sprayed the protesters with tear gas after the crowd tried to enter the Belgrade City Hall, where the local election committee is based.

Some of the protesters climbed on top of the building and broke the windows.

– Vučić is a thief, the protesters shouted, referring to the country’s president to Aleksandar Vučić.

International election observers criticized the elections

The populist Serbian Progressive Party SNS received 46.72 percent of the votes in the elections based on preliminary calculations. The center-left opposition group Serbia Against Violence came second in the election with 23.56 percent of the vote. The group announced on Thursday in a petition to the EU that it does not recognize the election result.

Seven members of the opposition group have started a hunger strike following the election result.

International election observers pointed out on Monday that the SNS has benefited from media bias, the influence of President Vučić and other irregularities such as vote buying.

According to Vučić, the accusations of tampering with the election results are “lies”. He hinted that unrest was being fomented from abroad.
