Thousands defy curfew in Bangladesh

Police in Bangladesh impose a strict curfew and ban demonstrations.
This after the heavy clashes that took place in the country during Friday.
But if the rules are broken, you can be shot.

300 police officers were injured during Friday’s clashes between protesters and police in several parts of the capital. According to spokesman Faruk Hossain, police have faced “hundreds of thousands” of protesters.

– At least 150 police officers had to be taken to hospital. Another 150 received first aid, he says, adding that two policemen have been killed.

At least 123 people have been killed in the clashes. And the death toll is rising.

The attacks on the protests are “shocking and unacceptable” according to Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Shoot those who break the rules

As a result, police imposed a strict curfew and banned demonstrations with a “shoot on scene” order across Bangladesh. It means that the police and the military can shoot people who defy the rules.

During the day, the police fired sharply at protesters in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, according to AFP reporter in place.

At least one person has been injured in the shooting as thousands defy the ban on demonstrations.

Students protest

Clashes in recent days have come as protesters, often students, protest a quota system that reserves up to 30 percent of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s 1971 war of independence.

According to the police, protesters have vandalized and set fire to a number of buildings. A prison has also been stormed and hundreds of prisoners freed when it was set on fire.
