About 7,900 people are to be evacuated from villages bordering the area of Papua New Guinea hit by a deadly landslide on Friday, a regional authority official said.
In total, the country’s government fears that 2,000 people may have been buried in the landslide, which occurred in Yambali in the highlands of Papua New Guinea’s main island. How many of them may still be alive is unclear.
According to this weekend’s estimates by the UN, around 670 people are feared to have died.
