“Thought someone was messing with him”

Bengt-Åke Gustafsson and Peter Lindmark were both involved and took WC gold in 1987.
Then the former remembers that “Pekka” received an unexpected call.
– He thought someone was playing with him, says “Bengan” to Sportbibeln.

Peter Lindmark, aka Pekka Lindmark, is one of the most meritorious Swedish hockey goaltenders of all time. He became a very popular profile thanks to his great ability to save pucks, but also because of his flamboyant and lovely personality, both on and off the ice.

Pekka’s career

Born and raised in Kiruna, Pekka began his hockey career in Kiruna AIF. But when his friends played in IFK Kiruna, he moved to the rival team as a teenager. As a 22-year-old, he moved on to Timrå, where Pekka remained for five seasons before moving to Färjestad. In Karlstad there were two SM golds, in 1986 and 1988.

After four years in Färjestad, Pekka moved to Malmö Redhawks (then Malmö IF) who bet big with the goal of getting up to the Elitserien. Something the club succeeded in, and they also won two SC golds during Lindmark’s nine years at the club, in 1992 and 1994. Malmö also won the EC for club teams in 1992.

Bengt-Åke Gustafsson played in the national team at the same time as Pekka Lindmark for several years. Among other things, when they won the WC gold in 1987. Then Bengan remembers that Pekka received an important call, to say the least.
– He received a phone call from the King. Pekka thought someone was messing with him, he didn’t understand anything, says Bengt-Åke to Sportbibeln and continues:
– Lying in bed sleeping and the phone rings. He answers and then it is the King on the other side who wants to congratulate. It was, it was a bit big. It was a fun sequence.
