A discovery that surprised the whole world was made in Botswana, located in the south of the African continent. The diamond found in the Karove Diamond Mine weighs exactly 2,492 carats. The 499-gram diamond was extracted by the Canadian Lucara Diamond company.
“EXTRAORDINARY AND HIGH QUALITY”
The Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corp., which extracted the diamond in question, said in a statement that the rough diamond, which was extracted undamaged from the Karove Mine using X-ray technology, was of “exceptional and high quality.”
“We are delighted to have uncovered this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond,” Lucara Diamond President and CEO William Lamb said in a statement.
TO BE INTRODUCED TO THE WORLD
The Botswana government announced that the newly discovered diamond will be unveiled to the world at the office of Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who will be one of the first to see the diamond.
THE SECOND LARGEST APPLE IN THE WORLD
With its weight, the diamond will be the second largest diamond found in the last century after the 3,106-carat (about 621 grams) “Cullinan Diamond” found in South Africa in 1905.
Four diamonds weighing over 1,000 carats were previously extracted from the Karove Mine.
The 1,758-carat (approximately 352 grams) “Sewelo Diamond” was unearthed at the Karove Mine in 2019, and the 1,111-carat (approximately 222 grams) “Lesedi La Rona Diamond” was unearthed in 2017, and the Lesedi La Rona Diamond was purchased by a British jeweler for $53 million.
