Thor 4 starring Chris Hemsworth hits an embarrassing MCU low

Thor 4 actually bears all the hallmarks of a bombastic box office hit. After all, alongside Chris Hemsworth, there are a lot of mega-stars in the film, Thor 3 creator Taika Waititi directed it and Marvel fans have been sitting on hot coals with their expectations for a long time. The numbers of the second cinema weekend speak an extremely sobering language.

Thor 4 with Chris Hemsworth sets negative Marvel record

As Collider calculates, the revenue of the Marvel cracker fell in US cinemas there by 68 percent. Everything had started promisingly. Thor 4 played more money than expected on the opening weekend with 144 million US dollars. And has now fallen back to 46 million.

That is of course still an immense sum for many other films. In the MCU context Thor 4 is in last place with other films. Only Black Widow and Spider-Man: No Way Home saw a similar drop. But there are no excuses for Chris Hemsworth’s blockbuster.

After all, Black Widow struggled with a simultaneous Disney+ release. The third Spidey with Tom Holland also had the most successful theatrical release in recent years before flying low. Thor 4, on the other hand, didn’t even have much competition to contend with. The next DC opponent Black Adam finally appears in October.

Disney+ and bad reviews: Why did Thor lose 4 viewers?

In general, with mega blockbusters of the Marvel or Star Wars format, a sharp drop after the start weekend is always to be expected. With Chris Hemsworth’s adventures, however, the surprisingly bad Thor 4 reviews and the already announced Disney + start in late summer to be responsible.
