Movie pilot: Thor 3 already broke with the image people had of a classic Thor movie. Do people take gods too seriously?

Taika Waititi: Yes for sure. Feel free to believe what you want. If it helps you in your life or makes you a better person, great. But it is so obvious that all these religions are man-made. Like when a guy says, “[Nach göttlichem Gesetz] men should be allowed to have eight wives. It’s so clear that thousands of years ago a man was rejected by a woman and then thought, ‘Now I’m going to start a religion to get revenge on women.’ And it’s been like this forever. So you have to have religion with you Use caution and see for the comedy it really is.

Did you have any crazy ideas for the film that you couldn’t use?

I wanted to show an orgy, but unfortunately it’s a Disney movie [lacht]. No, you have to cut. It doesn’t matter how long the film is. You always have to cut something out. And in films [wie Thor 4] you never know what the end product will really look like. Or what the story will be. So you film as much as you can and cut things out afterwards. Unfortunately we had to cut out a lot of scenes. But that’s always the case when you make films.

How does Christian Bale’s dark villain fit into such a funny movie?

It comes from a great comic series. So the character is already established in the comics. It’s just a great story and a relatable villain. You understand why he’s so angry with the gods. As humans, we search for a sense of why we are here and why things happen to us. People have been thinking about this for thousands of years. “Why do people die? Why are there such tragedies?” And I like the idea of the gods just sitting up there and playing with us. They get bored and we are their entertainment.

Taika Waititi as Hitler in Jojo Rabbit

As a director, you stand for funny, absurd films. Do you sometimes feel a bit trapped in that expectation because that’s what the fans expect – and might be disappointed if you’d made a quieter, more serious Thor movie?

So if I did Manchester by the Sea with Thor? [lacht.] Now that you mention it, I’m in the mood for it. Breaking the Waves with Thor. I like these films, but I would never want to do them. I want to have fun at work. I didn’t start until I was 30. I’m too old to be serious. None of my films will [bei den Filmfestspielen] run in Cannes because they all have a happy ending. Life is too short and the world too depressing to take it one step further. But I like to surprise people. [Bei Thor 4] everyone expected mega comedy, and then the movie starts with a dead kid. I enjoy undermining expectations – at least on a small scale.

Thor 4 is now through. What’s the next step for you?

I would love to make another Thor, but that will take years. We need a break from the character. Chris [Hemsworth] has other things to do and so do I. I’m currently writing something for Lucasfilm and something based on the comic book The Incal by director Alejandro Jodorowsky. I have a lot of things in the starting blocks, also for television. So I have a lot planned, but I can’t talk about everything. And I have another film planned about the worst soccer team in the world that is based on a true story: Next Goal Wins. It’s going to be a little film with Michael Fassbender coming out next year.
