He has recently turned 19 and is one of the world’s largest ski talents.
Alvar Myhlback wrote Swedish sports history by winning Vasaloppet this year.
But now ski legend Thomas Wassberg comes with the highly serious words.
The last few years have young Alvar Myhlback identified as the future of Swedish cross -country skiing on the men’s side. He is just 19 years old and has already left a big impression with his skiing career.
Myhlback’s success
Myhlback has already made eight starts on the World Cup, he won double JVM gold 2024 and he became the youngest rider through the ages to win the Vasaloppet this year. But still the ski legend is not Thomas Wassberg Completely convinced of the guy’s talent in the ski tracks.

Already in 2021 when Alvar was only 15 years old and broke through like a super talent, Wassberg weathered his views.
– If you go for experience and think positively, things can happen until he turns 19 years old. If you think negatively, he has reached his max and has nothing more to give. Probably he has a little more in himself, then maybe he spikes at the age of 16-17, then he has no more to give, the icon said.
Wassberg’s judgment
Four years later, Wassberg still does not want to admit that he was wrong in his judgment.
– It is very possible that he will be really good. But I have a little concern that he does not have the capacity to ride the tough traditional races, says Thomas in an interview with Expressen.
– In Vasaloppet it is about having to have a big tank. But for a five -mile like the one in Trondheim during the World Cup, a large engine is also required to cope with. And there is probably a little missing.

Alvar Myhlback has not yet managed to break through the World Cup in cross -country skiing with just a 19th place as the best result. Thomas Wassberg is obviously impressed by what the youngster has done in long -distance races but is skeptical of his future in cross -country skiing.
– He is dirty at what he does. It is impressive that he won the Vasaloppet already, the legend tells the evening newspaper.
What Wassberg is worried about is the teenager’s hard training load at such a young age.
– Alvar has trained as hard as very young. Is it just positive? Or does that mean that he reaches his max very early?, Says Thomas in the interview and hesitates whether Myhlback can live up to expectations as a skier of absolute world -class.
– No, maybe not. But I may be wrong.
