They are two of Sweden’s biggest skiing legends of all time and they have competed both with each other countless times.
Now Thomas Wassberg tells the Sports Bible what his relationship with Gunde Svan looks like now.
Thomas Wassberg69, and Gunde Svan63, are two of Sweden – if not the entire world – best skiers ever. They were both rivals and good friends over the years they met in the ski tracks. Now Wassberg tells the Sports Bible about what their friendship looks like today.
Swan and Wassberg after careers
Wassberg has four Olympic golds and three World Cup golds on the track record, Swan has the same number of Olympic gold but a full seven (!) World Cup gold. They took several of the medals together in relays. They spurred and motivated each other, but when Thomas ended in 1988, Gunde thought it would be difficult to maintain the same high standards. Then came Torgny Mogren61, instead as a replacement, which was of course good.

Although it was more than 30 years since they put the skis on the shelf, Svan and Wassberg meet every now and then. For example, Thomas Wassberg has been part of both the “prisoners at the fort” and “in the head of Gunde Svan” as Svan has programmed.
– I did this “in the head of Gunde” with Thomas. It was a very good program, and it was very fun to do. After all, I had to show a little different picture of Thomas than many from the media had created, to the viewers, Gunde has said in a previous interview with the Sports Bible.
Thomas Wassberg’s new words about Gunde Svan
He developed what he meant by the media’s picture of Wassberg.
– Many people thought that Thomas was like a small slats, and came to start and such. But I saw a completely different side, when he holds on hours after hours and moves the binding back and forth on the skis, to see how the bracket was affected on the skis, if the binding sat a centimeter farther or rear. And that picture has not arrived at all, I think that way in the media.

Gunde Svan said in the interview that he and Wassberg have a “fantastic good relationship” and he said that Thomas often comes back to the “prisoners at the fort”, despite Gunde plagging him with various challenges. Now Thomas Wassberg himself confirms to the Sports Bible that the two are still quite close to each other.
– Yes, sporadic contact we have. It shows up every now and then. That contact is good if we say so, he says.
