Thomas Wassberg wrote Swedish sports history on the ski tracks.
Now the icon reveals why he is actually called “Sack”.
There are few Swedish sports heroes who are as successful and popular as the good one Thomas Wassberg. He is one of our top cross-country skiers of all time and was a giant in the sport in the 80s.
Wassberg’s greatness
Wassberg won four Olympic gold medals, three World Championship gold medals and a total of eleven championship medals during his heyday on the ski slopes. After the fantastic career, we have also seen Thomas in a lot of TV programs such as “Master of Masters”, “Let’s Dance”, “Over the Atlantic” and “The Island Sweden”.

He is still active in skiing and has long worked for the classic club Åsarna IK. But strangely enough, he does not want to brag about his successes from the past and has neither a trophy case nor a medal shelf at home.
– I have no medals or prizes at home. They are unpacked or are at the tourist facility (Åsarna Skicenter), he says in an interview with Aftonbladet.
– It is better that people take me as a person, for who I am.
Thomas’ nickname
As famous as he is for his big winning skull, he is also for his unique personality. Wassberg does not really enjoy being in the public eye and prefers to keep to himself.

Therefore, he also does not use social media at all, even though he has Facebook.
– There is absolutely no reason to keep doing that, he says in the interview.
– Why!? There is no reason. I’m only on Facebook to follow Åsar’s elite skiers. We have a private group where we can send messages.

Over the years, many have called him “Sack”, now he himself reveals the truth about the strange nickname.
– It was some skier who started it, some old acquaintance. I’m not sure who started it. There are two possibilities, so it’s just as well to leave it unsaid, he tells the evening newspaper and admits why it was “The Sack”.
– There are different ways to sit on a sofa or armchair.
